Nutrition Labels

Nutrition Labels

You are what you eat, or so the saying goes. Today’s consumers want clarity on what they’re putting into their bodies, and nutrition labels are designed to offer just that.

A regulatory requirement for almost all packaged foods sold in Australia, at Cohesion we can help you create, print and apply labels that not only meet Australian standards, but that look good doing it.

Description

A nutrition label, otherwise known as a nutrition information panel, is a food label that displays a variety of information about a packaged food product.

At a minimum it will describe the energy (kilojoules/calories) contained in the food, and a breakdown of the nutrients by ‘serving size’ and ‘quantity per 100g’. It will also need data to back up any claims made on the package, such as ‘low fat’ or ‘a good source of fibre’.

FAQ

Our label printing expertise

Cohesion Labels might be almost 100 years old, but we’re young at heart. As WA’s most experienced label producer, we combine a history that stretches back to 1925 with the industry’s most modern and innovative mindset.

If you can imagine it, we’ll make it stick. And if you can’t imagine it, we can do that for you! We deliver nutrition labels your way.

What is on a nutrition label?

Along with the energy (listed in either kilojoules or kilojoules/calories), a nutrition label will feature a breakdown of the following nutrients:

  • Protein
  • Fat
  • Saturated fat
  • Carbohydrate
  • Sugars
  • Sodium

Any other nutrient mentioned on the packaging, e.g. ‘calcium for strong bones’ or ‘high in fibre’

Depending on the design of the packaging and the product at hand, a nutrition label can also feature any of the following information:

An ingredients list, including food additives
Date marking, including ‘best before’ where applicable
Information about the potential for an allergic reaction (e.g. nuts, seafood, soy, etc.)
Sulphites (if more than 10mg/kg has been added)
Directions for use and storage
Supplier information and country of origin

Some packaged food products will incorporate the nutrition label into the packaging, while others will add it as its own sticker on the back or the side of the package, separate to the branded product label at the front.

Can I customise nutrition labels?

As a nutrition label must accurately describe the food that it is stuck to, customisation is critical – you can’t just go shopping for nutrition labels online.

Happily our in-house design team is ready to help. They bring a wealth of experience in food label design, and are able to create something simple, or a custom branded label that makes your product look great and gives consumers all the nutrition information they require!

What nutrition label sizes do you print?

At Cohesion our high-end machinery is capable of producing the highest quality custom labels in whatever shape, size, material and design you need!

What material do we use for our nutrition labels?

Would you like the short answer or the long answer?

We use any and every material. Adhesive (acrylic and hot melt), laminate, removable, thermal, gloss, matte, paper, polypropylene, metallic… if it can be made into a label, it’s likely in our range.

This puts us in a position to offer the perfect nutrition label for your product. Whether it needs to stay strong when wet, frozen, microwaved or thrown against a wall, there’ll be a material in our range to suit.

Does the adhesive on your labels ever go off?

The durability of a label or sticker can vary depending on the material and adhesive in question, but a typical time frame guaranteed by suppliers is two years. If a label or sticker isn’t designed for certain conditions, whether moisture, extreme temperatures or direct sunlight, the lifespan of the adhesive may be shorter.

You can generally expect labels to last two years from the date of manufacture, if stored in optimal conditions (a temperature of 20C, and relative humidity of 50%.) As food products are generally eaten well within that two year period, you can be confident that your nutrition labels will stay strong.

Are nutrition labels waterproof?

Yes, a large portion of the Cohesion Labels range is waterproof (although not all of it.) The level of moisture that your product is likely to encounter will dictate your choice of label – a product that is likely to be submerged in water will need a higher level of water resistance than one that might be exposed to a little condensation.

Our friendly team can help you make the perfect label choice for your situation!

Can I print nutrition labels at home?

You can, and Cohesion’s range of Zebra direct thermal printers are an option, although these labels are susceptible to changes in temperature by design, so often aren’t appropriate for food packaging.

A safer bet is a professionally printed inkjet label, which will stay stronger for longer.
